Out of all the Shinigamis, the captains, and the Gotei 13 in Soul Society, Toushiro Hitsugaya is the youngest. Probably the youngest one to become a captain in many generations, earning Toushiro a dubbed name of "Boy Prodigy" or "Boy Genius". Toushiro is captain to the 10th Division with Rangiku Matsumoto (whom gives him a little more trouble than Toushiro's bargained for) as his Lieutenant.
Despite his status and title, Toushiro's very mature and carries himself very well while upholding his duties and priorities that comes with the job of a captain. He does has his moments though of getting his share of irritation with a few. Rangiku Matsumoto being one of them with her abandoning her paperwork for instance, and Momo Hinamori, whom occasionally still treats him like a little brother.
Momo Hinamori was one of the people Toushiro has been living with in the past when he was young. They shared many years together, and despite how much of a rascal Toushiro may have been, he always had a good heart with good intentions and would just about do anything to protect her.
Toushiro has a sharp sense and was apart of the few who had suspected Gin Ichimaru of betrayal. Though none would ever realize or have ever thought of whom Ichimaru had aligned himself with.
This extreme intuition of Toushiro lead to Toushiro's confrontation to Ichimaru about his suspicious actions, only to be stopped and assaulted by Hinamori, whom had believed that Toushiro was the one who had slain her beloved captain, Sousuke Aizen. Toushiro tried his best not to fight and hurt Hinamori, so he knocked her out and placed a shield around her, yet does not go after Ichimaru.
Toushiro begins to stop the execution of Rukia Kuchiki with the help of this Lieutenant, Matsumoto, and request the reconsideration of the Chamber of 46, which is the governing center of Soul Society. There he and his Lieutenant stumbled on a horrible sight to find that all the defense mechanisms surrounding Chamber of 46 has been broken through and all within the complex were killed. And from his inspection, due to the dried and crusting blood, Toushiro deducts that they were been killed days ago.
Toushiro receives a warning from a short meeting with Izuru Kira, that Hinamori has woken up and was following Toushiro around. He bolts back for the Court of Pure Souls as Matsumoto keeps Kira busy. The scene that Toushiro would find would anger him deeply as he found Hinamori had been extremely wounded with Ichimaru, and the now alive and well Aizen, the real mastermind behind all the foul play and conspiracy of Rukia's suspicious execution, caught red-handed in their act.
Driven mad, Toushiro brings out the Bankai of his Zanpaktou, Hyourimaru, granting him power over ice and wind, to do battle with the traitor, Aizen, only to be fatally wounded himself by the overbearing power of Aizen who meanwhile revealed Aizen's own sword secret. After this short conflict, Ichimaru and Aizen make their escape, leaving Hinamori and Toushiro to die.
Retsu Unohana, Captain of the 4th Division, and her Lieutenant, Isane Kotetsu, have realized Aizen's foul play and have come to save both Hinamori and Toushiro from death quickly. Isane then sends out a message to all within the Court of Pure Souls to reveal the true intentions and face of Sousuke Aizen.
In the aftermath, Toushiro had a speedy recovery from his ordeal, yet Hinamori has not awaken yet. He keeps close watch over her, even though he brushes those off who questions him about his actions towards Hinamori.
Toushiro then joins Juushirou Ukitake of the 13th Division (and Captain to Rukia Kuchiki) and Shunsui Kyouraku of the 8th Division upon trying to find the whereabouts of the missing Aizen, Ichimaru, and Kaname Tousen of the 9th Division (who was also in with Aizen and Ichimaru) due to the declaration and order of the 1st Division Captain, Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryuusai, for all the Divisions to be divided into Search Squads for the time being.
New and staggering, if not startling, information springs up and under circumstances, Toushiro makes his way into the living world where Ichigo and the others resides.
A child prodigy, Hitsugaya is the youngest death god to become a captain in a very long time. While the youngest by a considerable amount, he is actually one of the more mature captains. His youthful appearance belie his intellect and perception. Unfortunately, he does not always receive the respect fitting of his position. This is most obvious in Hinamori Momo, his childhood friend and closest companion. She is his only weakness and as such, is usually targeted by his enemies, such as Ichimaru Gin and Aizen Sousuke.
He does not have as much experience as the other captains and as such, is not as composed as some. Most of the time he is able to think clearly and control his emotions, but in certain situations (if Hinamori is injured), he will lose control. Since he is not fully developed, his power is still not at its peak. One of his opponents, Shawlong Qu Fong (an arrancar), stated that, due to his youth, Hitsugaya's Bankai is incomplete.
His zanpaku-to, Hyourinmaru, is the strongest ice/water type in all of Soul Society. Its shikai is a large ice dragon, capable of controlling the weather and freezing any surrounding water, including the water in the air. His Bankai grants him large wings of ice that allow him to fly. There is what appears to be a dragon tail attached to them. An ice dragon surrounds the arm gripping the blade, whose guard has changed into an eight pointed star. Behind him are what appear to be three four pointed "flowers." It is rumored that these symbolize the time limit his bankai has. Supposedly, when the all disappear, he becomes vulnerable and is no longer able to suppress all the injuries he has sustained with ice.
